Showing Up Without Hesitation
Lakeview Animal Clinic | Pewaukee, WI
For Lakeview Animal Clinic, care extends far beyond the practice, and showing up with empathy and presence in moments when compassion is needed matters more than anything else.
At Lakeview Animal Clinic, being there for clients means more than providing excellent medical care—it means showing up fully, especially in life’s hardest moments. Their story is a profound example of compassion in its purest form.
The call that came into the clinic was one no one ever wants to receive. A client’s two dogs had been tragically struck by a train. In the midst of overwhelming grief, his first instinct wasn’t to call a friend or family member—it was to call the Lakeview team.
Without hesitation, technician Paighton stepped forward.
“I never stopped to question whether I should help,” she said. “I just focused on how I could. And then I went.”
What followed was not part of any protocol or job description. Paighton met the client at the site of the accident, walking alongside him through a moment of unimaginable loss. There were no scripts, no clinical tasks to complete—only presence, empathy, and the quiet strength to stand with someone in their grief.
Her actions reflected something deeper than individual instinct. They reflected a culture.
“This wasn’t about job responsibilities; it was about values in action,” the team shared. “No one felt they needed to ask permission to help. We just communicated how it would happen.”
That mindset is intentional. At Lakeview, the team has built an environment where compassion leads, and where team members feel empowered to act in ways that prioritize humanity over convenience.
Ericka, Lakeview’s Practice Manager, captured it perfectly:
“We chose veterinary medicine knowing we’d face the hard moments. And when people turn to us in those moments, we show up—not only because we care, but because they need someone who will.”
Moments like this have a lasting impact—not just on the client, but on the team itself. They serve as powerful reminders of why this work matters. In a profession that can be emotionally demanding, experiences like these reconnect teams to their purpose.
They also redefine what veterinary care can be.
It’s not confined to the walls of a practice. It’s not limited to treatments or diagnoses. It’s about being present in the moments that shape people’s lives.
For the client, that day could have been faced alone. Instead, he had someone beside him.
That is what Heart in Action looks like choosing to step into difficult moments, leading with empathy, and offering something far more powerful than answers: presence.
Putting people first, always.
Creating memorable moments through one-of-a-kind care starts with people who lead with heart. If this sounds like you, we’d love to connect and help you explore what your next chapter could look like with Heartland.
