Compassion Beyond the Practice Walls

Just days after unexpectedly losing his wife, a longtime client of Progressive Animal Hospital in Wisconsin Rapids, WI, faced another heartbreaking reality. His senior dog, who had recently been diagnosed with osteosarcoma, was nearing the end of her life. With his wife’s funeral approaching, he had a final wish that his wife and her beloved dog could be laid to rest together.

Amid his grief, he asked the Progressive Animal Hospital team if there was any way they could come to him. While house calls are not part of the practice’s normal operations, they immediately jumped into action.

Without hesitation, the team at Progressive Animal Hospital rearranged appointments, made calls, adjusted schedules, and took on an additional workload to make this special request possible. Their focus wasn’t their own convenience; it was showing compassion to a client when he needed it most.

The team traveled to the client’s home, providing comfort, support, and care during one of the most difficult weeks of his life. Because of their flexibility and timely response, his wife and her soul dog were able to remain together, honoring the special bond they had shared.

Their client was also given an extra bit of peace amidst his unimaginable pain.

While he had been preparing to say good-bye to his beloved pet given her terminal diagnosis, his wife’s unexpected passing added an enormous amount of grief to the situation.

“He was so grateful for our ability to adjust and still provide the compassionate care that we had discussed beforehand,” said Dr. Anne Stanton. “Seeing her pass over the rainbow bridge in the comfort of their own home allowed at least a small amount of relief for him. He had a great support network of friends and family, and it was a truly peaceful moment.”

Moments like this serve as a powerful reminder that veterinary medicine is about more than just providing medical care. It is a commitment to empathy, compassion, and providing clients with the support that they need in hard moments – even when it means going above what is expected.

While the team’s actions brought comfort and peace to a grieving client, the experience also reinforced the profound impact their work can have beyond the practice walls. “This situation impacted us all so much and reminded us that the kindness and compassion we try so hard to provide really does make a difference,” Dr. Anne Stanton reflected.
