Courage Without Hesitation

Summers Ridge Veterinary Clinic | Janesville, MN

Compassion isn’t always measured by the care provided inside a veterinary practice. Sometimes, it’s found in a split-second decision that can change someone’s life.

For the team at Summers Ridge Veterinary Clinic in Janesville, Minnesota, that moment came when Practice Manager Rita Schultz heard a child screaming from a nearby alley.

A young girl riding her bike had been chased by a dog that had broken free from its restraint. The dog knocked her to the ground, pinning her beneath it while biting and scratching her.

Without hesitation, Rita dropped the phone she was using for a work call and ran toward the child.

Disregarding her own safety, she pulled the dog away and helped the injured girl get to safety. Holding pressure on the wounds to the girl’s head, Rita walked her to a nearby medical provider, remaining calm and focused while the child received care.

When Rita learned the girl’s parents were two hours away, she knew her work wasn’t done. She helped the girl remember her mother’s phone number, called to explain what had happened, and stayed by her side until another family member could arrive. In a moment filled with fear and uncertainty, Rita became a source of comfort, reassurance, and strength.

The girl’s parents later sent Rita flowers and publicly thanked her, calling her a hero for stepping in when their daughter needed someone most. True to her character, Rita remained humble, never seeking recognition for what she had done.

Her selfless actions prevented the young girl from suffering even more serious injuries and embodied the compassion, courage, and commitment that define Summers Ridge Veterinary Clinic. Her actions also reflect the legacy established by Dr. Troy Summers, who retired this past spring after 40 years of serving the Janesville community. His dedication to caring for others continues to live on through the team he helped build.

“We are not just here for pets; we are here to help our clients and our entire community,” Rita said. “I hope this shows our practice team that we can have an impact not just in our practice, but in our community as well.”

That’s exactly what Heart in Action looks like – extraordinary acts of compassion towards the people, pets, and communities we serve.

Rita’s willingness to step forward without hesitation is a powerful reminder that the influence of veterinary professionals extends far beyond the walls of the practice. Sometimes, the greatest act of care has nothing to do with a patient at all.

Putting people first, always.
